Students in Mr. Finn’s 8th grade tech ed classes created videos for the "What’s So Cool About Manufacturing" video contest. The contests were launched to create a new perspective and regional awareness on the exciting career opportunities that exist in manufacturing. This year the students are paired with SMS Manufacturing in Washington.

Moon Area School District is proud to announce that eight of its students were selected to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 1 Junior High Chorus Festival on Friday, February 28. Representing the middle school at the festival were seventh grade students Roger Lash and Sophia Singh, and eighth grade students Ashley Hsu, Jacob Lehr, and Evan Wicks. Representing the high school at the festival were ninth grade students Emerson Miller, James Nolan, and Gianna Quitoni.

Students in Mr. Finn’s and Mr. Hilpert’s adapted technology education classes took on a special project that not only helped the environment but also brought a buddy bench to Moon Area Middle School. This initiative was made possible thanks to High School Nurse Beth Rose, who connected the school with Nicole Ruckert, Human Resources Manager at Niagara Bottling in Imperial, PA. Their support helped bring the opportunity to our students and make this project a reality.

Moon Area Middle School 6th grade students recently showcased their scientific talents at the second annual science fair. The event featured a wide range of innovative projects, highlighting the students' curiosity, creativity, and dedication to scientific exploration.
Science fair sponsors, Mrs. Cairns and Mrs. Cronin, extended their gratitude to students and their families for their enthusiasm and support and a special thank you was also given to the Middle School PTG for generously sponsoring participant t-shirts.

Girls' Night Out (GNO) is back, and you won’t want to miss it!
Eighth-grade girls getting ready for high school are invited to an unforgettable night of fun, friends, and valuable life lessons. On Friday, March 7, 2025, students will head from Moon Area Middle School to the high school right after school for an evening packed with exciting activities, meaningful conversations, and plenty of chances to connect with current high schoolers.
From tackling real-life social topics to making memories with friends, GNO is all about preparing for the next big chapter—high school and beyond!
Twelve Moon Area Middle School orchestra students were recently selected and participated in Strings North Honors Orchestra Festival.
On February 10th, our students practiced and performed with students from eight other school districts for a one-day festival.
Eighth grade students on the YellowJacket team recently had the unique opportunity in their Language Arts class to serve as user test pilots for MyCited, an innovative educational software designed to enhance research through a variety of mediums.
During the testing phase, students engaged with MyCited's features, exploring its capabilities and providing detailed feedback on their experiences. The insights gathered from this user testing are instrumental in refining the software to better meet the needs of students and educators.
With the potential for an ice storm tonight, we want to ensure that all families are prepared in case we need to transition to remote learning tomorrow.
Moon Area Middle School has teamed up with the high school Speech and Debate Team to offer a clinic to 7th and 8th grade students. Since October, high school officers have been coaching interested middle schoolers to prepare for competition.
Four students competed at the North Allegheny Middle School Speech and Debate Tournament on Saturday, February 1, 2025.
Congrats to Anay Lodha (8th grade) for placing 6th in Congressional Debate and Eliana Vreeland (7th grade) for placing 5th in Mixed Interpretation.
An education and support virtual series that provides students, parents, families, staff, etc. the opportunity to learn and gain information from presenters from local organizations, agencies and businesses is available to MASD families and staff members.

We are writing to inform you about our Moon Area Elementary Redistricting Plan beginning at the start of the 2025-2026 school year. This plan was developed to balance enrollment across our elementary schools and ensure the best possible learning environment for all students. While this transition is still months away, we want to ensure families have ample time to prepare and receive all necessary information.
We want to ensure our families understand how this year's weather-related school closures will impact our school calendar.
As we previously shared, Thursday, April 17th, originally designated as part of spring break, will now be a regular school day. This change is necessary to make up for the snow day we had on Monday, January 6th.
The district designated Wednesday, January 22, 2025 as an Act 80 Day. This means students will not have to make up the day.

The Moon Angel Tree Program was able to support 191 of our students from all our buildings in all grade levels this year!
The wish lists were wide and varied, but the shoppers managed to procure everything from necessities like shoes, coats, clothes, socks, and toiletries; to wants of dolls, bikes, scooters, roller skates, sports jerseys, Lego sets, headphones, keyboards, easy bake ovens and even a guitar.
During the winter season, the MAMS Girls' Chamber Choir performed at several events, showcasing their talent and spreading holiday cheer. Their performances included the Montour Heights Country Club Members’ Annual Christmas Party, caroling in Moon Township neighborhoods, the middle school and high school Winter Choral Concerts, and appearances at the Omni William Penn and the City County Building in downtown Pittsburgh.
Caitlin Butcher, a fifth grade student at Moon Area Middle School, recently won a contest to have her picture featured in the Pennsylvania Attorney General's drug-free calendar.
Club Hope partnered with the Middle School PTG to make 50 essential items kits to go along with the angel gifts for students at the middle school. All of the items were donated to the middle school through the PTG.
Mrs. Lehman, Mrs. Cairns, and Club Hope students enjoyed being together for a service project supporting our community! Mrs. Wilson even baked for Club Hope, so the students got to enjoy fresh baked cookies and hot cocoa after all of their hard work and efforts.
It is with great pleasure that I present to you our 2024 annual report. As we reflect on another successful year, I am proud of the significant strides we have made in strengthening the academic programs that are at the core of our school district's mission.
We are excited to announce that the Moon Angel Tree Program is returning this holiday season! Last year, we were overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of our Moon Area families, whose contributions helped fulfill the wishes, needs, and dreams of 129 Moon Area students, bringing joy to many families during the holiday season.
The Moon Area Middle School faculty and staff would like to extend a giant thank you to the Moon Middle School PTG for stocking the teacher's lounge with snacks, drinks, and much needed classroom supplies! We are all so grateful for everything you do for us all year-round!
It may still be relatively warm outside, but the possibility of winter weather is right around the corner. As we prepare for the possibility of weather-related delays and closings, we want to make sure families are as prepared as possible.
The High School and Middle School Club Hope was invited to present at The Highmark Caring Place Summit in October. Members of Club Hope shared the activities that they do in honor of our loved ones and how we support grieving students in our schools.

The annual contest encourages students from across the region to explore historical topics and express their understanding through writing.

Eighth grade student, Ellen Perrott, won the Pittsburgh Region of the American Chemical Society Illustrated Poem Poster Contest! This year’s theme, "Picture Perfect Chemistry," inspired Ellen’s creative entry, which won first place in the 6th-8th grade division.
The Middle School honored veterans with a special Veterans Day assembly to recognize and appreciate those who serve our country.
In honor of Veterans Day, the MAMS Social Studies Department organizes an annual donation drive for our military.
Middle School students and staff can donate their unwanted Halloween candy and various basic care items to fill stockings and care packages for two local military outreach groups. After sorting everything, they deliver the candy and basic care items to Military Mission and Blue Star Mothers. The groups send out hundreds of care packages to deployed military all over the world with our candy and basic care items just in time for the holidays.
Seventh-grade Shark students are learning about sustainability by creating and maintaining a vermicomposting bin to reduce waste throughout the year.
Red Ribbon Week (October 21-25) was a success at Moon Area Middle School!
The Middle School Counseling Department and Student Council partnered to offer activities to students during the week. This year’s national theme was “Life is a Movie, Film Drug-Free.” Many film-related activities were planned for the week.
Mr. Matt Gault, Director of Education at Fort Ligonier, recently visited the 8th grade social studies classes to present a lesson on the importance of the French and Indian War in our area.

At 4:02 p.m., Moon Area School District officials and Moon Township Police both received a Safe2Say notification informing us of a safety incident on a Moon Area Middle School afternoon bus.
We understand that many of you have additional questions or concerns following the message we shared yesterday regarding the student who was found in possession of a weapon. While we are unable to provide every detail due to the ongoing investigation involving a minor, we want to keep you informed with the information we are able to share at this time.
Earlier today, a weapon was found in the possession of a high school student. We want to assure you that the safety of all students and staff was never compromised, and there was no immediate threat to anyone on campus. The police were immediately notified, and the situation was handled swiftly. At no point was there any intent to harm students or staff.
We understand that with recent tragic events, such as the school shooting in Atlanta and other incidents across the country, concerns about school safety are elevated. The safety of our students and staff is a top priority, and we want to reassure you that the Moon Area School District is deeply committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment.
In partnership with the Moon Area School District, the Moon Township Police Department invites the adult public of school-aged children to a Safety Night on September 26 at 6 pm at the Moon Area High School Auditorium.
Seventh grade Hawks student competed in constructing a paper airplane in Mrs. Broderick’s science class.
With limited materials available for use, the students had to use their communication skills and prior knowledge to make a great airplane. The winners for the contest were Lailah Metzler and Aubrey Pachero with their plane soaring 18.3 feet.

Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) joined Moon Area School District officials and clean air advocates to celebrate the $10.57 million federal investment to provide thirty-eight fully electric buses to school districts around Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District. Specifically, the leaders spotlighted the $1.2 million for Moon Area School District’s purchase of six new vehicles.

Our first fifth grade open house orientation/community vendor event took place on Monday, August 19.
On August 10th, four Moon Area Middle School students—DJ Gilbert, Max Kozlowski, Conner Patton, and Brandon Shedlock—graduated from the Allegheny County Camp Cadet program after being handpicked to participate in program.

Nineteen 8th grade students recently participated in a day long hands-on engineering competition.
The Design Lives Here competition is part of a broader initiative that aims to equip teachers and students to engage in engineering activities throughout the entire semester.
Moon Area School District held Town Hall meetings at Hyde Elementary on March 4, 2024 and Brooks Elementary on March 6, 2024 to engage in an open discussion regarding our elementary school structure and the support systems we provide for our students. I would like to thank everybody who attended the meeting.
